When Panic! at the Disco said This is Gospel, he was talking about Black YA Fantasy. I wish I had something deep and meaningful to say about how much I enjoyed this book, but brain empty after this. Ciannon crafted such a wonderful book. The worldbuilding was next level. I mean Jamaican-inspired fantasy!!! Here are some highlights:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Names have power and meaning
- Fantasy where the romance isn't the forefront (everything is more important to the mc's) 🖤
- A moment in part 3 very akin to Thanos’ "I don’t even know who you are"
- Are the dead actually dead? 🦴
- Samson and Delilah
- Big lizards 🦎
- Bargains and loopholes
- Constant threats
- Major burns (literally and figuratively) 🔥
- I want a man with swords now, possibly even a pirate 🏴‍☠️

It's Team Ira over here. 24/7. All day long. I cannot wait until my physical book gets here, so run out and get this book y'all. It's a must! This is fantasy. Black women have really been doing the thing.

Happy Sunday y’all 👋🏼 who else wanted to do things today and then woke up and said nah 😌 It’s my cleaning day but I had an allergic reaction the other day so my body’s like lets just lie here, and who am I to deny it 😊️ but on to the review:

I love Jonny's tweets, but this is my first time reading one of his books, and I was amazed. This collection is so relatable, and every essay/reflection had some piece of wisdom that I had to take note of. I mean the foreword alone told me this was gonna be a good book. Goodbye, Again is so insightful and feels like a warm hug. Like someone putting into words all the things you struggle to articulate.

I loved the theme of productivity and our value being tied to that. It's not something that's easy to break, so Jonny shows us ways in which he's struggled with it and ways in which he's tried to reframe some of his thinking around creating and working.

Although I read it in one night because I couldn't put it down, this is definitely something you can pick up whenever you have time. I can see myself coming back to it again to read my favorites like Removing and "What about your guilt is helping you?" (which absolutely read me for filth in a loving way and is pictured above).

I cannot recommend this collection enough! A must-have for your shelves.

Ello y’all 👋🏼 there’s so many good releases coming out this month. Any y’all are excited for? 👀 In Deeper Waters was one on my list, so I was so happy to get an ARC (I tried to make a stack with the cover colors but 🌚 lets not talk about it.) Onto the review 🥁

In Deeper Waters is exactly my kind of book. It was a fun read with pirates, magic, and a certain magical creature which are three of my favorite things in books.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The story itself was so sweet, and I loved Athlen and Tal (especially their relationship). Even though we don’t get to see a whole lot of Tal’s whole family, I would read spinoffs with the other characters because I need more Garrett, Kest, and Isa in my life (sorry Corrie I liked you too).

Tal was a great main character to follow. Seeing him wrestle with whether he should use his powers or not over the course of the book was really interesting as it wasn’t an easy decision for him to make, and there was an element of self-loathing there.

This is a book where the author gives you pieces of information that lets you figure out parts of the plot before the characters do, so part of the fun is waiting for them to figure it out too. It’s still entirely possible to make wrong assumptions like me though.

I would definitely recommend In Deeper Waters if you want a fun read with close-knit characters, adventure, and self-sacrifice.
