🏴‍☠️ Fire Sword and Sea by Vanessa Riley — Pub Dat 🏴‍☠️ Fire Sword and Sea by Vanessa Riley — Pub Date: 01/13/26 ⚓️

“In my heart, I know it has to be possible to dream and be righteous.”

Fire Sword and Sea was my first Vanessa Riley book, but it surely won’t be my last. I devoured this story and loved everything about it. I’m slightly biased because it doesn’t take much to get me excited when pirates are involved. I also love a good author’s note, so I enjoyed seeing the kind of research Riley did into Jacquotte’s life and where she took creative liberties to craft a complete and compelling story. The way disability, sexuality, and gender were depicted felt so refreshing.

Jacquotte was a fascinating character to follow because of how she fought to stay true to her convictions and desires, even when it was costly or seemed selfish. She wanted a life solely of her making, and she wasn’t afraid to do what she had to do to claim it for herself and for those who would come behind her or beside her. The women in this book were all interesting in their own ways, but I loved Lizzôa and Bahati the best.

This book had love and heartbreak. Wins and losses. Sacrifice and betrayal. Twists and turns. Plenty of action and entertainment along with lulls of reflection and introspection. There was also so much loss. I’m surprised I only teared up once, which was relatively early in the story. I don’t know if I would have been able to go on like Jacquotte did.

Overall, this is one that I can’t recommend enough if you enjoy historical fiction, care about justice and equality, and want to see women taking life by the reins. In a world that’s constantly asking us to defend what we believe in, this book will inspire you to hold true to your morals and not give up. Timely, one could say.

*Thank you to William Morrow for the finished copy. All opinions are my own.*

📚 2026 Q1 TBR 📚 In November, I decided that month 📚 2026 Q1 TBR 📚

In November, I decided that monthly TBRs weren’t really working for me. Sometimes I didn’t get to what I wanted, so I would just roll books over to the next month, but then it felt redundant to post the same books again. To solve that, I’ve moved to quarterly TBRs.

Some of these are books coming out Jan-March and others are just books I’ve wanted to get to. I’m sure I’ll read something that’s not on this list, but I love having a list of books I can pull from, even if I’m mood reading since these books are a mix of genres and age categories.

✨ 2026 Bookish Goals ✨ I don’t think I really mad ✨ 2026 Bookish Goals ✨

I don’t think I really made any 2025 book goals besides my 50 book yearly goal, which I did hit. This year I wanted to make goals that were feasible but would also stretch me out of my comfort zone.

Read 50 Books (I like setting this one low, so reading doesn’t ever become stressful)

Read intentionally — This year I want to make sure I’m prioritizing Black, chronically ill/disabled, asexual/aromantic, and indie books.

Engage More — It’s really easy for me to come on Instagram and scroll for a few seconds and call it a day. I want to make sure I’m actually engaging with and supporting the people I follow, so I want to engage for at least ten minutes daily.

Join a Book Club — This is one that’s a stretch because I enjoy my introverted, never leaving the house ways. But this is the year of trying new things and being in community.

Attend More Local Book Events — I love supporting indie bookstores, but most of the time, I’m going to events in Decatur, which is a real drive. I want to attend more events at bookstores closer to me like @shopthebookworm and @abettertodaybookstore.

Book More Author Interviews — Getting to talk to authors about their writing is so fun, so I want to get back to creating more interviews for my blog, especially ones with my clients.

Those are all my bookish goals for the new year 🤞🏼 Are you making any goals this year or are you just going with the flow?

Happy new year!! 🎉🎉 2025 was a year of so many ne Happy new year!! 🎉🎉

2025 was a year of so many new experiences and meeting new people. I’m so grateful for the book community, and I can’t wait to read more intentionally and attend more local events in 2026.

Even though I’ve fallen off with content creation on IG, this was the best year for my blog 🤩 I’m going to be bringing back author interviews in 2026 and finally start posting on my business page @bookishendsbiz

Thanks to all my lovely followers and friends for being on this journey with me 🫶🏼 And thank you to all the amazing authors whose books I’ve gotten to lose myself in this year ❤️

One more book review before I close out 2025 🎉 Th One more book review before I close out 2025 🎉

The pirates and Charleston setting drew me to this book, but the vampires made me stay. Kulika and Quick were both headstrong protagonists interested in survival and saving a loved one. They went about trying to fulfill those objectives in different ways, but I loved how their paths crossed and a natural reliance on each other was built. Quick’s perspective allowed the reader to be introduced to aspects of the world for the first time along with her while Kulika’s perspective deepened the lore and history of the Silvers.

The interactions between Kulika and Bartholomew were my favorite parts of the book. The power dynamics coupled with the history between the two characters made for a delicious (and toxic) combination. It made me question whether Kulika should give herself to him again, even though it went against every fiber of her being. The ending of the book was exciting and made me glad that the whole series is already out because I’m ready to continue following these characters.

I did find myself a little confused at first because it felt like we were getting a lot of information at once, but it made sense once I realized this book is connected to the author’s other series. If you go in knowing this is interconnected, or if you’ve read the other books, it should be an easier adjustment. And I still thought this book worked without having previous knowledge of the Silver or the characters. Overall, this one is a fun time with the right amount of action and romance.

I love A.P. Mobley’s books because she always does I love A.P. Mobley’s books because she always does a great job of bringing mythology to life with exciting plots and endearing characters. The Skeleton Faerie might be her most unique and twisted book so far with its blend of folklore and post-apocalyptic vibes.

It’s dark. It’s gory. It’s downright scary at times and definitely gave me a nightmare one night. But at the same time, there’s a tender, budding romance between the main characters Gus and Saoirse that’s a light amongst all the dark.

What I really loved about the book, beyond the worldbuilding and how smoothly the faerie folklore was integrated into the plot, were the twists and turns. My jaw was permanently stuck open, and I raced toward the ending to see how everything unraveled.

I’m eagerly awaiting the next book and would recommend this one if you’re looking for a fantasy that grabs you by the throat (and heart) and doesn’t let go.

In November I was invited to the It’s Lit! Literar In November I was invited to the It’s Lit! Literary Awards Luncheon by Black Girls Who Write in partnership with Spotify for Authors. It was hosted at the beautiful restaurant Serena Pastificio in Atlanta, which I’d never been to before.

First thing I did was beeline to get my photo taken because the setup was so cute, and the photographer was great. I loved the photos (although ya girl needed a retwist badly). There were bookish decorations set up all around the space, and I definitely had to add a few of the books to my TBR. I don’t drink, so I got a fancy mocktail with blackberry pink peppercorn syrup, ginger beer, and lime. Talk about spicy, but it was actually good.

The award portion of the event was so nice getting to celebrate all the authors and creators and creatives. I had no idea my friend @kesifelton was going to be there, so it was nice having to someone to sit with cause I’m too shy for my own good. It was also very cool getting to talk to the authors sitting at my table, like Lauren Lacey and Meka James.

All in all, I had a great time. Mika and Black Girls Who Write threw a great event, and I was so glad to be invited!

🐝 Book Mail!!!🐝 I’ve been MIA because I’ve been i 🐝 Book Mail!!!🐝

I’ve been MIA because I’ve been in the throes of a flare-up, so the fatigue is so real. But I got some amazing book mail from The Hive as a welcome to the program🍯

So excited to be a #HiveInfluencer, and now the real struggle is deciding which of these to start first.

Lucky Seed: Succession meets Crazy Rich Asians in this chaotic, darkly funny romp about the lengths a wealthy family will take to ensure the birth of a male heir from the gay black sheep of their clan.

Dinner at the Night Library: A whimsical, charming novel about a mysterious library in Tokyo that opens after dark, following the employees who bond each night over special meals inspired by the books on the shelves.

Thank you to The Hive for these lovely books 🫶🏼
